How to keep your screen awake on Windows 11

Use a temporary browser wake lock when you only need the display for one task, or change Windows power settings when the whole PC must stay awake across applications.

Quick method: use a temporary browser wake lock

Open Sleep Blocker in a current browser and an unlimited wake session starts automatically. Keep the page visible, or end the session and choose a timer instead. Windows can continue using its normal power plan after the session ends because the page does not permanently change your system settings.

Keep the Sleep Blocker page visible. A browser wake lock is intended to keep the display from dimming or locking while that page remains active; it is not a replacement for a Windows system-level keep-awake utility when the browser is minimized or hidden.

Change the Windows 11 screen and sleep timeout

  1. Open Start, then select Settings.
  2. Go to System → Power & battery.
  3. Open Screen, sleep & hibernate timeouts.
  4. Choose how long Windows should wait before turning off the screen.
  5. Separately choose how long the device should wait before entering sleep.

Microsoft documents separate controls for turning off the display and putting the computer to sleep. Keeping the screen on does not necessarily keep every background process running, so adjust both settings only when your task truly requires it. See the current steps in Microsoft's Windows 11 power settings guide.

Which Windows method should you choose?

Choose Sleep Blocker when:

  • You need the display for a presentation, recipe, dashboard, or reading session.
  • You cannot or do not want to install an application.
  • You want the normal timeout to return automatically when the session ends.

Choose Windows power settings when:

  • The computer must remain awake while the browser is hidden.
  • A download, render, backup, or other background process must continue.
  • You need the setting to apply across several applications.

Windows troubleshooting

Energy saver can limit background activity and reduce display brightness. Some Windows 11 computers also support Presence Sensing, which may turn off or lock the screen when you walk away. Check those options under Power & battery if the display still behaves differently than expected.

Closing a laptop lid normally triggers a separate hardware or Windows action. A browser wake lock cannot override it. Microsoft lists lid behavior under Control Panel → Power Options → Choose what closing the lid does.

Windows questions

Does Sleep Blocker move the mouse?

No. It uses the browser's Screen Wake Lock API and does not simulate mouse movement, keyboard input, or work-status activity.

Will it keep Windows awake with the lid closed?

No. Lid behavior is controlled separately by Windows and the computer's hardware.
