How to keep your Android screen on
Android offers both temporary browser wake locks and device-level screen timeout settings. The right choice depends on whether you need one visible page or a setting that applies across apps.
Quick method: keep an Android browser screen awake
Open Sleep Blocker in a current compatible browser and an unlimited wake session starts automatically. Keep the page in the foreground, or end the session and choose a timer instead. This temporary method is useful for recipes, studying, navigation instructions, presentations, and monitoring without changing the phone's general screen timeout.
Android devices differ by manufacturer, and battery-saving software can be aggressive. Switching apps, turning on battery saver, locking the phone, or hiding the page may cause the browser to release the wake lock.
Change Screen timeout on Android
- Open the device's Settings app.
- Select Display or Display & touch.
- Select Screen timeout, Sleep, or the similarly named setting.
- Choose a longer duration. Some devices offer Never, while others limit the maximum time.
On current Google Pixel phones, Google places the control under Settings → Display & touch → Screen timeout. Google also documents an optional Screen attention feature on supported Pixel devices. Other Android brands may use different menu names, so search Settings for “screen timeout” if you cannot find it.
Browser wake lock or Android setting?
- Use Sleep Blocker for one temporary page and automatic return to the normal timeout.
- Change Screen timeout when the longer duration must apply across apps.
- Use a manufacturer feature such as attention detection when you want the screen to remain on only while you are looking at it.
Android battery considerations
Keeping the display lit uses more battery. Lower the brightness, use a timer, and connect the device to power for long dashboards or information displays. Battery saver may dim the screen or prevent a wake lock even when the page requests one.
Android troubleshooting
- Return to Sleep Blocker and confirm the page is visible.
- Turn off battery saver temporarily if it is blocking the request.
- Update the browser and Android system components.
- Check manufacturer-specific battery or display restrictions.
- Start a new wake session after returning to the page.
Android questions
Can a browser override the power button?
No. Pressing the power button or manually locking the phone ends the visible wake session.
Does it work on every Android browser?
No. The browser must support the Screen Wake Lock API, and the operating system must grant the request. Sleep Blocker reports an error instead of claiming success when a lock is refused.
