How to keep your Mac screen awake

A browser wake lock is a convenient temporary option for reading, presenting, and monitoring. macOS settings provide broader control when other apps or background tasks must remain active.

Quick method: keep the Mac display awake in a browser

Open Sleep Blocker in a compatible browser and an unlimited wake session starts automatically. Keep the page visible, or end the session and choose a timer instead. This is useful for a temporary presentation, long article, recipe, or monitoring screen because macOS returns to its existing display timeout when you stop or close the page.

Leave the page visible in its own window. If you switch to another tab in the same window or minimize it, the browser may release the screen wake lock. A second monitor or side-by-side window works well when another app needs your attention.

Change when macOS turns off the display

  1. Open the Apple menu → System Settings.
  2. Select Lock Screen in the sidebar.
  3. Adjust Turn display off on battery when inactive.
  4. Adjust Turn display off on power adapter when inactive.

The available labels and durations can vary by Mac model and macOS version. Apple notes that delaying or preventing sleep increases power consumption. See Apple's current Mac sleep and wake instructions.

Prevent automatic sleep while connected to power

On a Mac laptop, go to System Settings → Battery → Options. When the option is available, enable Prevent automatic sleeping on power adapter when the display is off. On a desktop Mac, similar controls can appear under Energy settings.

This system option is different from keeping the display illuminated. It can help a background task continue even after the display turns off, while Sleep Blocker is specifically intended to keep a visible screen awake.

Which Mac method should you choose?

  • Temporary visible task: use Sleep Blocker and end the session when finished.
  • Long background process: use macOS Battery or Energy settings.
  • Working on battery: prefer a timer, reduce brightness, and avoid an unlimited session unless necessary.

Mac troubleshooting

Low battery, browser restrictions, a hidden tab, or closing the laptop lid can end a browser wake lock. A closed lid may also put the Mac to sleep unless the hardware, power, and external-display conditions support another mode. Sleep Blocker does not override those system decisions.

Mac questions

Does the page permanently change macOS settings?

No. The browser request ends when you stop the session, close the page, or the system releases the wake lock.

Can it keep a render or download running in the background?

Do not rely on a screen wake lock for that. Use macOS power settings or a dedicated system-level method for background work.
